Coe-Brown Northwood Academy
Guidance Department Admissions Information

Because Coe-Brown is a public academy, our admissions procedure information
falls into two categories:

1) We have contracts with Northwood and Strafford to be the high school for all residents of those two towns. Consequently, students who live in/ move into those towns will automatically become Coe-Brown students barring very unusual circumstances.

2) Students who reside in Nottingham, Barrington, or Deerfield may apply to come on a competitive basis, as may students from any other town within reasonable commuting distance. Nottingham, Barrington and Deerfield will pay all or a substantial amount of a student’s tuition, whereas other towns which have their own high schools would require a parent to pay private tuition to Coe-Brown. Please note that no transportation is provided by towns other than Northwood and Strafford.

Guidance counselors divide the student body alphabetically to serve students for all four years. After reading the pertinent information below, depending on the student's last name you should contact one of the following counselors at 942-5531:

A-F Mrs. Anne Onion (ext. # 101)
G-Mc Mr. Stephen Smith (ext. # 105)
Me-S Mrs. Tara Tenasco (ext. # 152)
T-Z Ms. Wendy Porter (ext. # 122)

The first day of the 2007-2008 school year will be Friday, August 17th for Freshmen (9:45 AM- 2:34 PM). Orientation for transfers will be from 10:30 until noon, with lunch optional. Since a portion of this day will be spent outdoors, students should come dressed to be active, with sunscreen and a water bottle. Lunch will be provided for all.

All other students will start on Monday, August 20th.
All fall sports practices begin on Monday, August 13th. Inquire about specific times. Sports physicals will be available for girls on Thursday, August 9th and for boys on Friday, August 10th. Further details can be found on the Coe-Brown website under Athletics. Physicals done by your own physician must have been done after June 1st, 2007.

Welcome to Coe-Brown!

Moving to Northwood or Strafford Over the Summer with Incoming High School Students

Welcome to Coe-Brown!
If you are reading this in the spring prior to your move, please review the rest of this page and contact the appropriate Guidance Counselor to make an appointment to register your student prior to June 21, 2007. Some classes do fill up fast, so it is important to have students select classes as soon as it is definite that your family will be moving to our area.

If you are reading this after June 21st, please contact Mrs. Cheri Wolf, the Guidance Secretary, at 942-5531(ext. # 107) or at cwolf@coebrownacademy.com so that she can make a tentative appointment for you to speak with the appropriate counselor at some point between August 9th and August 14th.

Meanwhile, in the interim, the registration process will be greatly facilitated if parent or guardian and student complete the following tasks (You may stop by the Coe-Brown office to pick up these documents, or click on each to download or follow the link for information.):

1) Fill out an Application.

2) Complete a Release of Records and leave it with the Coe-Brown office so that we can obtain records from the previous school.

3) Go to the SAU #44 office on Route 4 (942-1290) to complete a District Assignment Form to have it approved and returned to us. (This form is in triplicate and cannot be posted on this site.) N. B. According to New Hampshire state law, no students may register for school in a town unless they are living with a parent or legal (court-appointed) guardian. In the case of change of custody between divorced parents, the SAU will require evidence from the court that the parent in our district has physical custody. **Until an assignment form is approved, your child will not be able to start school at Coe-Brown.

4) Review the CBNA Newsletter (Available by mail or fax upon request from the office at (603)-942-5531) for all pertinent information that is asked of all transfers as well as of current students, and the Sports Physical information.

5) Review the Program of Studies so that you have ideas about which courses you wish to take.

When you come to register, please bring with you:
1) The completed Application.
2) The most recent report card or transcript from your previous school.
3) A copy of your immunization records. (Students will not be permitted to start school without this.)
4) Special Education or 504 information, if pertinent.

Families Moving to Towns Other than Northwood or Strafford Over the Summer
with Incoming High School Students

As noted above, students from towns other than Northwood and Strafford are accepted on an application basis as space permits. Since we never know what will happen over the summer as families move in and out of the two towns, this often means that we cannot determine whether or not there will be room in a particular class until shortly before school opens in August. Given this uncertainty, if you still want to consider Coe-Brown as an option, please contact Mrs. Cheri Wolf, the Guidance Secretary, at 942-5531(ext. # 107) or at cwolf@coebrownacademy.com so that she can make a tentative appointment for you to speak with the appropriate counselor at some point between August 9th and August 14th.

You also should take the following steps before then (You may stop by the Coe-Brown office to pick up these documents, or click on each to download or follow the link for information.):

1) Fill out an Application.

2) Complete a Release of Records and leave it with the Coe-Brown office so that we can obtain records from the previous school.

3) Review the CBNA Newsletter (Available by mail or fax upon request from the office at (603)-942-5531) for all pertinent information, including the Summer Reading requirement that is asked of all transfers as well as of current students, and the Sports Physical information.

4) Review the Program of Studies so that you have ideas about which courses you wish to take.

When you come to interview about potential registration, please bring with you:
1) The completed Application.
2) The most recent report card or transcript from your previous school.
3) A copy of your immunization records. (Students will not be permitted to start school without this.)
4) Special Education or 504 information, if pertinent.

If the student is accepted at Coe-Brown, at that point you must confirm with your home district that it is committed to paying tuition. N. B. According to New Hampshire state law, no students may register for school in a town unless they are living with a parent or legal (court-appointed) guardian. In the case of change of custody between divorced parents, the School Administrative Unit (SAU) will require evidence from the court that the parent in its district has physical custody. **Until an assignment form is approved or we receive other notification from your SAU your child will not be able to start school at Coe-Brown.
Nottingham residents: Go to the SAU #44 office on Route 4 (942-1290) to complete a District Assignment Form to have it approved and returned to us. (This form is in triplicate and cannot be posted on this site.)

Deerfield residents: Call SAU # 53 at 485- 5187 for confirmation regarding tuition payment to Coe-Brown.

Families Moving to Northwood or Strafford
During the School Year

Please note: Many times families have no choice about when they must move. However, when it comes to moving a high school student, certain challenges may arise if the current school of your student runs on a block schedule (with students enrolled in only three or four classes per semester) as opposed to a more standard schedule such as our seven block day during which most students are enrolled in either five or six classes. Regrettably, this can cause situations in which a transferring student might lose credit in some classes or be required to make time up in a summer school program in order to attain credit. Even if your current school has a traditional schedule, classes in which your student is enrolled may not exist here. If you have the luxury of choosing your moving time, please call the appropriate guidance counselor for your child to consult about this in advance.

Once you know you will be moving, please call in advance to make an appointment with a guidance counselor. We are often busy teaching in classes or in previously scheduled meetings or appointments, thus making dropping in at Coe-Brown with the expectation of an immediate appointment sometimes frustrating for you.

Please bring with you the following documents:
1) The most recent report card or transcript from your previous school. (A full transcript will be needed for upper-class students to determine requirements met.)
2) A copy of your immunization records. (Students will not be permitted to start school without this.)
3)Special Education or 504 information, if pertinent.

Once here, you will need to:

1) Fill out an Application

Families Moving to Towns Other than Northwood or Strafford During the School Year
with Current High School Students

As stated above, students from towns other than Northwood or Strafford will be accepted only on an application, space-available basis. Occasionally, we might have a deserving applicant but still be unable to offer admission due to lack of space in the necessary classes.

All the notes and procedure written under Moving to Northwood or Strafford will then pertain, with the exception that tuition assignment forms will be obtained as outlined at the end of "Families Moving to Towns Other than Northwood or Strafford Over the Summer", as noted above.

Admission Process for Eighth Grade Students
Living in Towns Other than Northwood and Strafford

In the fall of eighth grade year, the guidance counselors in Barrington and Nottingham work to coordinate the application process for us. If you live in one of those towns and your student is attending the public school, please obtain information directly from your student’s guidance counselor. Some districts also serve as liaison for home-schooled students as well.

Coe-Brown is in direct touch with Good Shepherd School and Cornerstone Christian Academy regarding the admissions process.

Students attending any other private school or living outside the five towns mentioned, may contact the Coe-Brown Guidance department after Columbus Day regarding setting up a visiting day and the application time-line.

In general, the time-line is as follows:
