Golf tournament renamed in honor of Paul J. Guptill ‘52

This year marked the fifth anniversary of the CBNA Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament and it was a milestone in other ways, as well. The tournament raised more than $5,000, the most ever, and the Coe-Brown trustees unanimously voted to rename the tournament in honor of CBNA alumnus and long-time golf tournament supporter, Paul J. Guptill ’52. Mr. Guptill and his wife, Julia, were thrilled with the honor.

Mrs. Guptill, who knows how much her husband loves the Academy, felt that it was a fitting tribute. Mr. Guptill was both surprised and pleased, but believes strongly that the tournament needs to grow even more.

“I’d like to thank the trustees and staff of the Academy for the tremendous honor of having the tournament named after me,” says Mr. Guptill. “This year’s event was the biggest and best in the history of the CBNA Golf Tournament and I give much of the credit to CBNA Development and Alumni Affairs Director Margaret Joyce for her hard work. Thank you also to the alumni who came out and played and helped to promote the event.

“If we are going to make this golf tournament bigger and better it’s going to take more work from all of us. This is the only place where you can play, have fun and earn money for a good cause. It’s a win-win situation for all of us. I’d like to reach out to all alumni and friends of the Academy and say let’s get behind the tournament and make it as successful as it can possibly be!”

While Mr. Guptill was not a member of this year’s winning foursome, he had a great time and made the tournament a lively event for everyone. The winners were Mark Veilleux, Ann Smith, David Powers and Beth Gutteridge. Taking second place was the team of Brandon Boggs ‘02, Micah Smith ‘04, Isaiah Smith ’02 and Trevor Mauck ‘02. The most challenged golfers (yes, that means they came in last) were Leigh Hansen, CBNA Assistant Headmaster Paul Davis, Kevin Madison and Mike Newman.

Many thanks to all the players and especially, to all the sponsors of this event. Over the five years of the tournament the event has raised more than $15,000 in support of the Academy’s endowment fund. Next year, the CBNA Paul Guptill ’52 Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 11, at Nippo Lake Golf Club in Barrington. See you then!
