STUDY AND TEST STRATEGIES

PREPARING BEFORE TESTS AND QUIZZES
1. Find out early:
    • The type of test (essays, multiple choice, etc.).
    • The date of the test and what it will cover
2. Highlight and outline the book chapters
3. Take notes in class everyday to use for review
4. Read them over once a week to keep the information fresh in your mind, and to test your understanding.
FOR MOST SUBJECTS:
1. Read your notes quickly, with a pencil in hand. Make a list of all the main topics covered in the course.
2. For each topic, read your notes, again noting of all the important ideas within that topic on note cards or summary sheets. Do this for all the main topics, making sure you know all the facts. List them.
4. Get help with any ideas or facts you don't understand.
5. Show your list of main topics (each containing lists of important ideas, with facts listed) to the teacher. Ask if there's anything missing.
6. Find someone to work with. Have them ask you to explain things from your lists.
A FEW THOUGHTS ON MATH TESTS

1. READING YOUR NOTES IS NOT AS VALUABLE AS ACTUALLY DOING PROBLEMS! Use your notes for a source of sample problems to try ... the answers are there so you can see what to do, if you've forgotten.
2. Identify the problem types that you can't do. Get help with these from your teacher.
3. DO MORE PROBLEMS! This can't be emphasized enough ... practicing the skills you learned during the course is the best way to help you recall them and get good at them again. Remember: just because you got 80% on a unit test four months ago does NOT mean you will get 80% on that topic on the exam ... unless you practice all the skills again!
4. If you're studying with a friend, the most valuable thing you can do together is make practice tests for each other, work on them separately, and then correct the answers together.
5. It really helps, if you are having problems, to find someone to study with who knows the material well and can explain it to you. They learn the material better by having to explain it to you!

YOUR FINAL REVIEW BEFORE AN EXAM
1. Read and Review your outlines and notes, highlighting the important information
2. Use the highlighting to make outlines, summary sheets or note cards for yourself
3. Concentrate on identifying the things you don't know then find a well-prepared student to study with
5. Get a decent amount of sleep the night before the test, being exhausted is the last thing you need on exam day!
6. Eat something (fruit, cereal, or a sandwich) before the test... this will help with your mental alertness
7. Don't cram the day before the exam, the best way to learn is to space your review out over time
HOW TO HANDLE TEST ANXIETY
1. It's natural--accept it
2. Some anxiety is good for motivation
3. Take several slow deep breaths, concentrate on relaxing your whole body
4. During the test: think about the test items not how well you're doing
5. If anxiety interferes regularly, see your counselor
