During April vacation, ten CBNA students traveled to Panama. They brought donations of backpacks and school supplies, shoes, clothes and money to two different schools.
Rio Pavo is a small, rural school at the edge of the Darien forest. It currently has no electricity or running water. Money raised by Tyler Crabrtree was used to buy flush toilets, which will be installed by local residents at the school. Each student was given a backpack filled with school supplies, collected by Paige Davis. Lots of extra supplies were left with the teacher. Erica McDonnel collected over eighty pairs of shoes, as well as a variety of clothing. These are being distributed to the residents of the Rio Pavo community and the La Marea indigenous village.
CBNA students spent three nights in the Embera community of La Marea, enjoying a variety of activities including swimming, panning for gold, being decorated with traditional body paint, hiking and dancing. In addition to the school supplies, backpacks and shoes, baby chicks were gifted to the families of the village.
Students then traveled to the remote cloud forest of Chucanti via horseback and foot, spending two nights and seeing a variety of monkeys, birds and other rainforest wildlife. Plans are already underway for next April¹s trip. CBNA juniors are encouraged to consider senior portfolio projects that might continue the support shown to these communities. The needs are many and all donations are greatly appreciated.
