COE-BROWN STUDENTS SPREAD AWARENESS OF CRIMES

NORTHWOOD—Dr. JoAnn Zylak’s “Law & You” class recently participated in a crime awareness project that turned students into walking billboards for the day. Each of the thirteen students in the class researched a specific crime, including its statistics and societal impact on state, national, and international levels. After designing a t-shirt to visually represent these crimes, the students wore them throughout the day and answered questions about each crime posed by their classmates and teachers. Some of the crimes included vandalism, arson, animal abuse, shoplifting, rape, drug abuse, domestic violence, street racing and hate crimes.

In addition to this project, the “Law & You” class, an elective which provides students an opportunity to earn college credit, has welcomed several guest speakers from law enforcement and criminal justice programs, and will soon be taking trips to superior court to observe several jury trials, and a county correctional facility.
